Ampilatwatja is situated approximately 325km north-east of Alice Springs, off the Sandover Highway. The population of approximately 300 speak Alyawarr.
Ampilatwatja School is situated at the end of the community, opposite the store. Other services of the community include the council office, post office, arts centre, church and medical clinic.
The student body is mainly indigenous with some non-indigenous enrolments. The school consists of 5 classes: Pre-school, T-2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7-9. There is also a staff office, resource room and library. Funding allows for students to be provided with breakfast at 8am as well as fruit snack and lunch throughout the day. The school day begins at 8.30am and concludes at 3.10pm.
